Dedicated to Student Success
My Approach
My work focuses on building strong relationships with students and their families while advocating for their individual needs. I create meaningful educational experiences that foster growth, confidence, and independence. Each student brings unique strengths, and I am passionate about helping them discover their potential.
My Commitment
I'm committed to creating meaningful educational experiences that foster growth, confidence, and independence. Each student brings unique strengths, and I'm passionate about helping them discover their potential.
Teaching with Purpose
Student-Centered
Every lesson is designed with individual student needs in mind. I prioritize understanding each student's learning style, strengths, and challenges to create personalized pathways to success.
Inclusive Environment
I foster a classroom culture where all students feel valued and supported. Inclusion means ensuring every voice is heard and every student belongs in the learning community.
Advocacy & Support
Beyond the classroom, I advocate passionately for my students' needs. Building partnerships with families and colleagues ensures comprehensive support for student growth and development.
Teaching Approach & Expertise
IEP Development, Implementation & Data-Driven Instruction
I believe communication, collaboration, and preparation are the keys to writing meaningful, culturally responsive IEPs. I begin by understanding parental/caregiver wishes, identifying both academic and functional skill goals, recognizing student strengths, and developing the Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP). Working closely with related servicesOT, PT, SLP, social workers, school psychologists, and ABA specialists—I develop measurable, ambitious goals aligned with the Common Core State Standards or the Alternative Standards (Essential Elements).
Implementation requires frequent and consistent data collection. I create data collection sheets for each goal and objective, recording data weekly through formal and informal assessments. Data are graphed regularly to assess intervention success and guide instructional modifications to optimize student outcomes.
Behavior Management & De-escalation
My approach prioritizes prevention through clear, consistent routines and visual schedules. I use First/Then strategies, timers, and offer student choice to promote engagement and autonomy.
In crisis situations, student safety is always my first priority. I employ de-escalation techniques—using fewer words, maintaining a calm voice and demeanor. When in-person, I get on the student's level, show calm visuals, and once the student has regained composure, I ask them to communicate their needs or feelings through AAC devices or other communication methods. I follow school protocol, document incidents, and debrief with the student when everyone is calm.
Differentiated Instruction
Every learner is unique. I differentiate instruction by considering multiple dimensions: Does the student need modified content? Does the content need to be presented differently? Should the student demonstrate understanding by using an alternative method? Does the student need to be in a more sensory-friendly setting? This comprehensive approach ensures that all students have appropriate access to the grade-level curriculum.
Collaboration & Family Partnerships
I prioritize building relationships with families before the school year begins. I send weekly progress emails highlighting classroom successes—a practice I've always maintained. This consistent communication fosters trust and partnership.
With general education teachers, I share IEP-at-a-Glance documents highlighting accommodations and co-plan weekly or as needed to ensure meaningful inclusion and appropriate modifications.
As both a special educator and parent of an adult child with autism, I understand that parental/caregiver concerns stem from wanting the very best for their child. I listen with empathy, communicate clearly with paraprofessionals and colleagues, and lead by modeling instructional strategies and showing genuine appreciation for their hard work.
A Personal Perspective
Our 28-year-old son is on the Autism Spectrum, and I know he would not be where he is today without early intervention. This personal experience drives my passion for elementary special education and deepens my understanding of how a disability affects entire families—siblings, marriages, and relationships.
I bring a unique dual perspective as both educator and parent. I recognize that every small win is important, especially at younger ages. Those little wins add up to bigger wins and lay the foundation for lifelong success.
